Bio
Madeline Vogelmeier is an artist based in Columbus, Ohio. Working primarily in painting, she incorporates fabric and other mixed media to lend her work a more sculptural element, pushing the paintings into a large-scale installation that surrounds the viewer and places them in a vastness of material. Influenced by her own experiences with memory and the mechanisms in which her brain and body process loss and grief over time, her paintings work to move the viewer to think about how memory takes shape in their own lives.
Statement
My work explores the combination of painting and sculpture, diving into this intersection where paint takes on a purely tactile quality and installations form through the addition of textiles, plaster, and other mixed media. By being transported into this ethereal, dream-like space where one is surrounded by transparent and built-up surfaces, an alternative atmosphere is created.
In questioning my own understanding of memory and how it changes shape over time, I attempt to translate these visions into physical space. At times it feels as if unmovable barriers exist in my mind, blocking my reach to parts of my life that I wish to revisit. As part of this translation process, these barriers become thick, textured layers of paint piled on top of each other, acting as the imaginary blockades I can’t seem to break down. By placing these paintings in a realm of textile, sculptural installations, I create the environment that pervades my everyday state of mind, providing the viewer a glimpse of my experience while also presenting the opportunity to confront the reality of memory they themselves live with.
